The Four Agreements: A Timeless Guide for Growth

katrincharlton

Some ideas inspire, while others guide us. “The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz do both for me. 🌟

I often talk with my kids about them and introduce them to my clients because I believe they offer a powerful foundation for leadership and personal growth:

1️⃣ Be impeccable with your word – Your words create your reality. Use them wisely. Words have power—they can inspire, encourage, or harm. Being impeccable with your word means speaking with honesty and aligning your words with your values.

For example, a client of mine often overpromised at work, leading to stress and disappointment. By focusing on this agreement, they started communicating more honestly, which built trust with their team. Personally, I practice this with my children by choosing words that guide and uplift them rather than criticise. 🙏

2️⃣ Don’t take anything personally – What others say is often about them, not you. This agreement has transformed many of my clients, especially leaders.

One client felt deflated by a team member’s negative comments during meetings. By adopting this agreement, they realised the feedback reflected the other person’s frustrations, not their own abilities. On a personal note, I use to take critical feedback about my coaching career to heart. Learning to detach from others’ opinions freed me to grow without unnecessary emotional weight. 💡

3️⃣ Don’t make assumptions – Clarity can save relationships and avoid drama. This agreement encourages us to ask questions rather than fill in the blanks.

I’ve seen clients assume their work wasn’t valued, only to later discover it was deeply appreciated. Personally, I’ve assumed my kids weren’t listening to me, only to learn they had thoughtful reasons for their actions. Asking questions builds understanding and stronger connections. ❓

4️⃣ Always do your best – Your best changes daily, but showing up fully is what matters. I remind clients that their best depends on their circumstances—whether balancing work challenges or family responsibilities.

This resonates with me as a parent and professional. Some days I’m on top of everything, and other days I’m just managing the basics. Accepting this helps me stay energised and focused. ✨

These agreements are timeless and transformative. They can change how we lead and connect with others, fostering better communication, resilience, and alignment.

In my coaching, I often help clients navigate transitions—whether professional or personal. These agreements are particularly helpful during such times, as transitions can bring self-doubt, misunderstandings, and external noise. “The Four Agreements” provide a framework that promotes clarity, confidence, and adaptability—qualities we need most during change.

They aren’t just for tough times. They are a compass for daily life, helping us align with our values and intentions—at work, at home, or within ourselves.

Here’s a challenge: Pick one agreement to focus on this week. Apply it at work, with family, or in personal interactions, and notice how it impacts your mindset and relationships. 🏆

Which of these resonates most with you right now? 💭
